You're fascinating, you are!

What was your biggest ever fashion mistake?

bullet

Elizabeth: Hot Pants! Remember these?

bullet

Ingrid: A gold and silver evening gown that I wore to the opera in Covent Garden.  It was far too fancy – everyone else was in black – and I had to keep my coat on the entire evening because my boy friend was so embarrassed.

bullet

Lois: No such thing as a fashion mistake – just another bag of goodies for the charity shop

bullet

Alison: Shorts too short when I was 19, I heard a woman behind me complain that they were indecent.

bullet

Harriet: It’s too traumatic to even recall….

bullet

Vanessa: A long black leather skirt and matching halter top, which James insisted I buy.  I wore it only once, when we went to Amsterdam, where I figured it would just blend in.  An old woman spat at me in the street!

bullet

Shirley: My (first) wedding dress because of the symbol it now is in my memory

What has been the biggest achievement of your life so far?

bullet

Elizabeth: My great taste and judgment in choosing my husband!

bullet

Ingrid: Climbing a huge marble mountain in Bulgaria.  It was very slippery and dangerous and I was very unfit.  Never again!

bullet

Lois: BA(Hons) Embroidered Textiles First Class!!!

bulletAlison: Not conforming and marrying the person I wanted to marry.
bullet

Harriet: Climbing Mount Kota Kinabalu at 4093m- although giving birth in October this year will beat that I’m sure!

bullet

Vanessa: Becoming a successful journalist after only an evening class at a local college.

bullet

Shirley: My children first, my business second

Which major life decision would you change if you could?

bullet

Elizabeth: Our initial decision to leave the UK and subsequent decision not to return. Life’s full of choices but you have to make the best of the path that you choose.

bullet

Ingrid: I should not have left Sweden for the UK.

bullet

Lois: Nothing – everything has its pluses

bulletAlison: To defy my Grandfather and go to art school at 18 years.
bullet

Harriet: None – although I fell into my career by accident, so often wonder what I might have ended up doing if there hadn’t been that accident.

bullet

Vanessa: Waiting 10 years to change my name after my divorce.

bullet

Shirley: My first wedding - one decision to be with a man that affected over 30 years of my life

Describe your fantasy home.  Where is it?  What style?

bullet

Elizabeth: On the coast, with a wonderful view, lots of glass windows, a big conservatory/kitchen/living area, lots of gallery and library  space(s) for our) art collection and  books, a large garden  with an orchard of old fruit trees.

bullet

Ingrid: It is by the water, in French/Scandinavian style, very light with lots of pale blue.

bullet

Lois: Something that is totally maintenance free, near London, in the country, near a coastline, near Waitrose, with a climate of sunny skies and temperatures always in the seventies except for the odd day of snow

bullet

Alison: No walls but has a roof, in a forest but near the sea.

bullet

Harriet: A Georgian Rectory somewhere in typically beautiful English countryside.  Alternatively, a fantastic new build where I could bring together all the features of various properties I have loved, to create my dream home – somewhere on a sunny coast, but close to my loved ones.

bullet

Vanessa: It would be near a private beach with lots of fossils. A stone cottage, at least 200 years old, with thick walls and huge fireplaces, a large bedroom with a vaulted beamed ceiling and bathroom with a claw-footed bath; a cosy kitchen with French doors onto a garden which comes right up to the house- the whole thing surrounded by an old stone wall.  Oh, and an alpaca herd next door.

bullet

Shirley: A converted barn in the countryside on the outskirts of a thriving village community

What was the last occasion when you were horribly embarrassed?

bullet

Elizabeth: I was 16, and was on a double date with a friend and two visiting lads from another city. We went to a fairground and had my first ride on the “Waltzer”, came off it totally disoriented, threw up on the ground and had to be escorted home. It wasn’t impressive!

bullet

Alison: when child number 1 lifted up my skirt in a department store to see what colour knickers I had on! He was aged 3yrs

bullet

Vanessa: A national newspaper printed a photo of me where I looked like a 100 year-old waxwork of my grandmother.  I imagined that my ex-husband saw it and counted himself lucky.

bullet

Shirley: Bound to have been when I said something in public that showed I had no idea what the previous conversation had been about because I either misheard or forgot what had been said.

Who would you want to have with you in a crisis?

bulletElizabeth: My daughter.
bulletIngrid: My youngest son, Max
bulletAlison: MY senior cat
bulletHarriet: my husband
bulletVanessa: Julie – she’s got a cool head

bullet

bullet

Vanessa: Meow.

bullet

bulletShirley: Pete, my husband - really!

What is the most evocative scent for you and why?

bulletElizabeth: Lilies – any sort from Freesias to lily-of-the-valley and on up!
bulletIngrid: Lily of the valley, it smells of hope and Spring.
bulletAlison: White Allyssum.a rock pant as the smell would  drift in through my nursery window...the earliest smell  I can remember
bulletHarriet: In terms of perfume, it’s Fendi – a winner every time.  In terms of a smell/scent, you can’t beat freshly laundered linen sheets.
bulletVanessa: Krispy Kreme donuts, it’s the smell of America. And the smell of the Paris underground always takes me back to when I was starving and homeless there.
bulletShirley: Yvresse by Yves St Laurent makes me feel good and has earned me lots of compliments while wearing it.

bulletElizabeth: Patience, financial smarts, analytical ability and intuition.
bulletAlison: Humour, passion, photography, relating to people, art
bulletHarriet: hopefully I’m a good friend
bulletVanessa: I have a great memory for colour (but not much else); people seem to like my writing; I can take photos while scuba-diving, and they aren’t bad.
bulletShirley: I can express myself in words and I care about people

bulletElizabeth: Nice underwear with industrial strength control!
bulletIngrid: A nice coat, makes me feel safe and a bit mysterious because no one can see what’s underneath.

bulletHarriet: Great underwear...and killer heels
bulletVanessa: My beige shearling coat.  I bought it on eBay for not much money, and it makes me feel like a Russian princess.

bulletAlison: drowning

bulletVanessa: Something bad will happen to James…and the world’s oil supply will dry up and civilisation will come to an end.
bulletShirley: That Pete will die before me as he is older than me

bulletElizabeth: Don’t understand the question – I’m happy with my lot most of the time
bulletIngrid: When my second son was approached to rebuild Ground Zero

bulletIngrid:  Neither, I like cool and sunny.
bulletLois: Rather cold than hot
bulletAlison: I do best in mild temperatures and am good against a wall!! So I am flower!
bulletHarriet: hot weather mama
bulletVanessa: Hot weather mama, cold makes me miserable.
bulletShirley: Cold weather - you can always find somewhere to get warmer. When too hot, I cannot get cool enough and it makes me ill

If you won Ł/$ 1 million, what would you do first?

bulletElizabeth: Invest the money safely with a bank until I worked out a financial plan on how to invest it wisely
