You're fascinating, you
are!
What
was your biggest ever fashion mistake?
 |
Elizabeth: Hot Pants! Remember these? |
 |
Ingrid: A gold and silver evening gown that I wore to the opera in Covent
Garden. It was far too fancy – everyone else was in black – and I had to
keep my coat on the entire evening because my boy friend was so
embarrassed. |
 |
Lois: No such thing as a fashion mistake – just another bag of goodies
for the charity shop |
 |
Alison: Shorts too short when I was
19, I heard a woman behind me complain that they were indecent. |
 |
Harriet:
It’s too traumatic to
even recall…. |
 |
Vanessa: A long black leather skirt and matching halter top, which James
insisted I buy. I wore it only once, when we went to Amsterdam, where I
figured it would just blend in. An old woman spat at me in the street! |
 |
Shirley:
My (first) wedding dress because of the symbol it now is in my memory |
What
has been the biggest achievement of your life so far?
 |
Elizabeth: My great taste and judgment in choosing my husband! |
 |
Ingrid: Climbing a huge marble mountain in Bulgaria. It was very slippery
and dangerous and I was very unfit. Never again! |
 |
Lois: BA(Hons) Embroidered Textiles First Class!!! |
 | Alison: Not conforming and marrying the person I
wanted to marry. |
 |
Harriet:
Climbing Mount Kota
Kinabalu at 4093m- although giving birth in October this year will beat
that I’m sure! |
 |
Vanessa: Becoming a successful journalist after only an evening class at a
local college. |
 |
Shirley:
My children first, my business second |
Which major life decision would you change if you could?
 |
Elizabeth: Our initial decision to leave the
UK
and subsequent decision not to return. Life’s full of choices but you have
to make the best of the path that you choose. |
 |
Ingrid: I should not have left Sweden for the UK. |
 |
Lois: Nothing – everything has its pluses |
 | Alison: To defy my
Grandfather and go to art school at 18 years. |
 |
Harriet:
None – although I
fell into my career by accident, so often wonder what I might have ended
up doing if there hadn’t been that accident. |
 |
Vanessa:
Waiting 10 years to
change my name after my divorce. |
 |
Shirley:
My first wedding - one decision to be with a man that affected over 30
years of my life |
Describe
your fantasy home. Where is it? What style?
 |
Elizabeth: On the coast, with a wonderful view, lots of glass windows,
a big conservatory/kitchen/living area, lots of gallery and library
space(s) for our) art collection and books, a large garden with an
orchard of old fruit trees. |
 |
Ingrid: It is by the water, in French/Scandinavian style, very light with
lots of pale blue. |
 |
Lois: Something that is totally maintenance free, near
London, in the
country, near a coastline, near Waitrose, with a climate of sunny skies
and temperatures always in the seventies except for the odd day of snow |
 |
Alison: No walls but
has a roof, in a forest but near the sea.
|
 |
Harriet:
A Georgian Rectory
somewhere in typically beautiful English countryside. Alternatively, a
fantastic new build where I could bring together all the features of
various properties I have loved, to create my dream home – somewhere on a
sunny coast, but close to my loved ones. |
 |
Vanessa: It would be near a private beach with lots of fossils. A stone
cottage, at least 200 years old, with thick walls and huge fireplaces, a
large bedroom with a vaulted beamed ceiling and bathroom with a
claw-footed bath; a cosy kitchen with French doors onto a garden which
comes right up to the house- the whole thing surrounded by an old stone
wall. Oh, and an alpaca herd next door. |
 |
Shirley: A converted
barn in the countryside on the outskirts of a thriving village community |
What
was the last occasion when you were horribly embarrassed?
 |
Elizabeth: I was 16, and was on a double date with a friend and two
visiting lads from another city. We went to a fairground and had my first
ride on the “Waltzer”, came off it totally disoriented, threw up on the
ground and had to be escorted home. It wasn’t impressive! |
 |
Alison:
when child number 1
lifted up my skirt in a department store to see what colour knickers I had
on! He was aged 3yrs |
 |
Vanessa:
A national newspaper
printed a photo of me where I looked like a 100 year-old waxwork of my
grandmother. I imagined that my ex-husband saw it and counted himself
lucky. |
 |
Shirley: Bound to have been when I said something in public that showed I
had no idea what the previous conversation had been about because I either
misheard or forgot what had been said. |
Who
would you want to have with you in a crisis?
 | Elizabeth: My daughter. |
 | Ingrid: My youngest son, Max |
 | Alison: MY senior cat |
 | Harriet: my husband |
 | Vanessa: Julie – she’s got a cool head |
 | Shirley: My husband is brilliant in all situations |
Are
you a cat or a dog person?
 |
Elizabeth: Dog – definitely. |
 |
Ingrid: Both, but more cat. |
 |
Lois: Cat |
 | Alison: Cat |
 |
Harriet: dog |
 |
Vanessa: Meow. |
 |
Shirley: Cat, always and forever. |
Who
is the sexiest man on the planet?
 | Elizabeth: I invoke the Fifth Amendment! |
 | Ingrid: Prince Philip – he’s nasty and is a
foreigner like me, he’s entertaining and exciting |
 | Alison: The next man I flirt with |
 | Harriet: My husband (or Brad Pitt, if my husband’s
not available!) |
 | Vanessa: Viggo Mortensen (after James) |
 | Shirley: Pete, my husband - really! |
What is the most evocative scent for you and why?
 | Elizabeth: Lilies – any sort from Freesias to
lily-of-the-valley and on up! |
 | Ingrid: Lily of the valley, it smells of hope and
Spring. |
 | Alison: White Allyssum.a rock pant as the smell
would drift in through my nursery window...the earliest smell I can
remember |
 | Harriet: In terms of perfume, it’s Fendi – a winner
every time. In terms of a smell/scent, you can’t beat freshly laundered
linen sheets. |
 | Vanessa: Krispy Kreme donuts, it’s the smell of
America. And the smell of the Paris underground always takes me back to
when I was starving and homeless there. |
 | Shirley: Yvresse by Yves St Laurent makes me feel
good and has earned me lots of compliments while wearing it. |
What special skill/talent do you have (there can be more than one)?
 | Elizabeth: Patience, financial smarts,
analytical ability and intuition. |
 | Alison: Humour, passion, photography, relating to
people, art |
 | Harriet: hopefully I’m a good friend |
 | Vanessa: I have a great memory for colour (but not
much else); people seem to like my writing; I can take photos while
scuba-diving, and they aren’t bad. |
 | Shirley: I can express myself in words and I
care about people |
What piece of clothing does the most for your self-esteem?
 | Elizabeth: Nice underwear with industrial
strength control! |
 | Ingrid: A nice coat, makes me feel safe and a bit
mysterious because no one can see what’s underneath. |
 | Alison: shoes |
 | Harriet: Great underwear...and killer heels |
 | Vanessa: My beige shearling coat. I bought it
on eBay for not much money, and it makes me feel like a Russian princess. |
 | Shirley: The designer jacket I bought in a sale for
less than Ł20. It's burnt orange which is one of my colours, has long
lines and always makes me feel 'right' |
Who
is the sexiest woman?
 | Elizabeth: Sophia Loren!! Plus – she speaks
Italian!! |
 | Ingrid: Julia Roberts |
 | Alison: Sophia Loren. Although 70 she has
a beautiful face, profile, a beautiful inner spirit and always so well
dressed, great legs plus she has a curvy figure |
 | Harriet: Angelina Jolie |
 | Vanessa: Honour Blackman, I want whatever she’s
drinking. |
 | Shirley: Me when I'm with Pete and I have no idea
what does it for men! |
What
is your biggest fear?
 | Elizabeth: Being trapped in a very, very
enclosed space. |
 | Ingrid: That I’ll be unable to look after myself,
just end up a vegetable in a home. |
 | Alison: drowning |
 | Harriet: losing my loved ones |
 | Vanessa: Something bad will happen to James…and
the world’s oil supply will dry up and civilisation will come to an end. |
 | Shirley: That Pete will die before me as he is
older than me |
When
was the last time that you felt really, really happy?
 | Elizabeth: Don’t understand the question – I’m
happy with my lot most of the time |
 | Ingrid: When my second son was approached to
rebuild Ground Zero |
 | Alison: Today...yesterday and I will tomorrow.
|
 | Harriet: Now- awaiting the birth of my first child |
 | Vanessa: This morning, as I walked around the
garden in the sunshine. |
 | Shirley: last night |
What was your ambition when you were a child?
 | Elizabeth: To be a doctor. |
 | Ingrid: to be a nurse. |
 | Lois: to be a meteorologist |
 | Alison: To be a house
hold cavalry officer, ride a shiny black horse and guard the Queen |
 | Harriet: to run the country |
 | Vanessa: To be an astronaut (I grew up in Florida
in the 1960s). |
 | Shirley: I have no recollection of having
ambitions |
Who
in your life makes you laugh most often?
 | Elizabeth: My husband. |
 | Ingrid: half-drunk friends. |
 | Alison: my best beloved Michael |
 | Harriet: my husband |
 | Vanessa: James, almost every day, until I cry. |
 | Shirley: Pete (this is getting boring but it’s
true). |
Are
you a cold weather bunny or hot weather mama?
 | Elizabeth: Hot weather!! |
 | Ingrid: Neither, I like cool and sunny. |
 | Lois: Rather cold than hot |
 | Alison: I do best in mild temperatures and am good
against a wall!! So I am flower! |
 | Harriet: hot weather mama |
 | Vanessa: Hot weather mama, cold makes me miserable. |
 | Shirley: Cold weather - you can always find
somewhere to get warmer. When too hot, I cannot get cool enough and it
makes me ill |
If
you won Ł/$ 1 million, what would you do first?
 | Elizabeth: Invest the money safely with a bank
until I worked out a financial plan on how to invest it wisely |
 | Ingrid: Look at it for a while, then buy some art,
then some diamonds – big rocks, I’ve never had any – then a little home by
the water. |
 | Lois: Worry |
 | Alison: See my accountant,& solicitor!! |
 | Harriet: Pay off my mortgage and go on a luxury
holiday |
 | Vanessa: Pay off my mortgages and James’s and buy a
condo right on the beach in the Bahamas. Buy a plane with a crew to fly us
wherever we want to go without the hassle of airports. |
 | Shirley: Pay off my children's credit cards and
buy our converted barn |
What age do you feel inside?
 | Elizabeth: Young - perhaps 30 years younger than I
am |
 | Ingrid: 38 |
 | Lois: 39 |
 | Alison: 26 exactly |
 | Harriet: I don’t really feel an age… I just live
life and try to enjoy and learn from the experience |
 | Vanessa: 30 |
 | Shirley: 23 |
Who
last broke your heart?
 | Elizabeth: When my son’s ex-girlfriend died at
24 from an overdose of insulin. Such a waste of a young life! |
 | Ingrid: The man who, after my late husband, is the
love of my life. He’s married to someone who he can’t leave. |
 | Alison: I reserve the right to remain silent! |
 | Harriet: A Scot called Alistair – it was only
temporary. |
 | Vanessa: James, but we got over it. |
 | Shirley: Rather too many men before Pete |
If
you could change your first name to anything, what would it be?

middle name. |

would make the best leader of your country right now?
 | Elizabeth: Can’t see much talent on the horizon
right now! |

great charisma and can negotiate |
 | Alison: me |
 | Harriet: Sadly, I have no idea – although I was
quite impressed by Jamie Oliver’s attempts to make a difference. |
 | Vanessa: Kenneth Clark – a fat boozer who
smokes is going to be far more fun than that miserable Gordon Brown |
 | Shirley: Charles Kennedy but look what they did to
him |
Do
you paint your fingers/toes/neither?
 | Elizabeth: Both |
 | Ingrid: Both |
 | Lois: both |

fingernails looking good |
 | Shirley: both, infrequently |
What keeps you awake at night?
 | Elizabeth: Ideas! |
 | Ingrid: Paper work I should have done. |

 | Harriet: I am not sure the answer is printable! |
 | Vanessa: Thinking of plots for stories |
 | Shirley: not a lot |
If
you had 1 day to live, how would you spend it?
 | Elizabeth: With my husband and family – lots of
great food outdoors in the garden, with reminiscences, taking lots of
photos. |
 | Ingrid: Drink lots of champagne, nibble all day
listening to music |
 | Lois: Crickey – one day will never be enough |
 | Alison: In the garden with best beloved, cats and
my children all eating chocolate ice cream |
 | Harriet: With my family and friends, having a
bloody good party. |
 | Vanessa: Swimming with James and the manatees, and
then go to Frog’s Landing in Cedar Key and sit on the deck watching the

 | Shirley: Making sure my family know how much I
love them and cuddling Pete |

pretty when I’m fatter than I should be. |

Valentine which said ‘Postman postman do not tarry, this is the girl I
mean to marry’. But he didn’t. |
 | Alison: Aged 18yrs 6 months going out for a cup of
coffee with a boy. |
 | Harriet: At about 3 years old – I fell in love
with my first boyfriend, Tim, at nursery. |
 | Vanessa: Aged 6, John Hobbs at primary school. He
ran out into the lawn sprinklers and got all wet just because I told him
to. |
 | Shirley: I always went for older boys and now
know I was looking for security |
Describe your favourite meal, as many courses as you like.
 | Elizabeth: Excellent pâté with French bread,
followed by smoked salmon with lemon, finished with lots of fresh
raspberries and cream, lots of cheeses and accompanied by a very good
white wine. |
 | Ingrid: Fresh lobster with lots of melted butter,
then American apple pie with whipped cream |
 | Lois: Like food too much to choose a favourite |
 | Alison: Porridge. Tuna with pasta, oranges |
 | Harriet: Deep fried camembert with cranberry
sauce, Surf and turf – (a good steak with wonderful Channel Island
Scallops) with broccoli and proper chips, Home made ice cream, A great
selection of smelly cheese |
 | Vanessa: Carrabas’s fried calamari and marinara
sauce, followed by seared tuna steak with sesame seed crust and noodles
with soy and ginger sauce and seaweed, followed by Frog’s Landing key lime
pie. Washed down with really cold white wine. |
